Highlights of Andorra

Sharing is caring!

Andorra is a tiny independent nation tucked away between France and Spain, in the heart of the Pyrenees Mountains. It has a ton of incredible landmarks to check out. Below are our picks for some of Andorra’s most exciting and charming sites.

Duty-free shopping

Andorra and Luxembourg are two of the world’s smallest countries. If shopping is your thing, both offer a duty-free haven to shoppers and business people. Andorra is famous for its luxurious shopping experiences, with designer goods at significant savings – many people enjoy making a few sneaky purchases before heading off to the next stop on their travels. Be careful though, some of the discounts are so good you might need to buy more luggage to fit it all.

Winter sports

Andorra is nestled in the middle of the Pyrenees. So, from winter until spring, it sees some of the best snow conditions in the area. No list of Andorran highlights would be complete without mentioning the vast array of winter sports on offer for nearly half of the year.

If you enjoy snowboarding, skiing, sledging, tobogganing, skating or hockey, heading to Andorra is your best bet for more snow and ice than you could shake a hockey stick at! Just make sure you bring the right equipment, including suitable clothing – otherwise you’ll have to buy everything once you’re there.

Spas of Andorra

After you have spent all day snowboarding, who isn’t ready for some deep tissue relaxation? Andorra is well-known for its luxurious spas, such as the Caldea Thermal Water Spa. The Caldea Spa has everything you could need to help restore your energy, from Jacuzzi’s, steam rooms and hot stone massages, getting you ready for the next day on the slopes.

Nature parks

Being in the Pyrenees, Andorra has incredible natural landscapes and national parks where you can hike, trek and camp. Make sure you pack a good raincoat though, as inclement weather is frequent in the region. You really don’t want to be left with only a rain poncho for protection.

The three main nature parks to check out are the Valls del Comapedrosa, Madriu-Perafita-Claror and the Valle de Sorteny.

Valls del Comapedrosa National Park

Valls del Comapedrosa contains Andorra’s highest peak at 2,942m and covers a protected area of 15.42 km2. It is best known for it’s high mountain scenery and plethora of hiking trails complete with high mountain huts. Take a guided tour or go geocaching or for the horse lovers, follow trails on horseback.

Madriu-Perafita-Claror

A glacial valley, located southeast of Andorra, Madriu-Perafita-Claror is also one of the biggest natural parks in the world (at over 40,000 hectares). It is home to many rare and endangered species of wildlife and is considered by many the “spiritual heart” of Andorra. Recognized as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004 for it’s cultural landscape it is another park with many hiking routes and high mountain huts worth exploring.

Sorteny Nature Park

Sorteny Nature Park is probably best known as a botanical haven, rich is flora. It boasts beautiful wildflower meadows, plains and forests of mountain pine. So, if plants are your thing, make sure to check out Sorteny Valley during your visit.

To get the most out of your trip to one of Andorra’s nature parks, consider going on a guided wildlife tour. This will give you the opportunity to spot golden eagles, deer, boar and bearded vultures.
